To whom should an athlete turn after being sidelined from their sport following an acute shoulder or knee injury? The answer is Dr. Robin Gehrmann, who has devoted his career to helping athletes, especially younger ones, return to the field safely and reliably.
Team physician for the Philadelphia Eagles and Flyers for several years prior to joining North Jersey Orthopedic Group in Millburn, Dr. Gehrmann has collaborated with elite therapists and trainers. He now applies that knowledge to helping his patients recover. He also instructs on injury prevention, which is more prevalent now due to overuse.
Orthopedics called to Dr. Gehrmann because he enjoys solving problems. During high school and college, he worked in his own carpentry business. He transferred these skills to working on the human body, especially enjoying the biologic reconstructive nature of the practice. His areas of specialty include minimally-invasive arthroscopic procedures, and complex ligament and cartilage transplant and reconstruction.
When asked what drew him to sports medicine, he explains that he can relate to athletes and understands what it takes to get back to a sport, even while recovering. Moreover, Dr. Gehrmann seeks innovative ways to cross-train around an injury. He often coordinates work-outs with coaches and trainers so the athlete can remain immersed the sport while safely recovering.
Dr. Gehrmann describes his approach as conservative. His first choice is always to wait and do rehabilitation, if possible, saving surgery as a last resort. “I treat the individual, not the MRI, integrating the person’s age and activity level with personal expectations,” notes Dr. Gehrmann. After explaining all options, doctor and patient set out a personal course of treatment.
Patients rave about Dr. Gehrmann’s warm, friendly, reassuring bedside manner. They point to his professionalism in how he takes the time to explain every option. He prides himself on educating each patient to achieve optimum results.
Dr. Gehrmann is the Head Team Physician for all of the Rutgers-Newark Athletic teams and several high schools as well. In addition to football and soccer players, he also works with gymnasts and Mixed Martial Artists. He is the Rutgers Orthopaedic resident education site coordinator at Overlook Hospital. Dr. Gehrmann completed his Residency at Rutgers-New Jersey Medical School and Fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania.
